The Difference Starts in the Design – Why Custom Beats Off-the-Shelf Every Time

If you drive a 79 Series, you already know: these rigs are built for hard touring, heavy loads and long kilometres.  That’s exactly why the design stage of a canopy build is the most important step… yet the one most builders rush or skip entirely.

A WKND Warriors canopy doesn’t start in the workshop, it starts with the planning. We start by unpacking how you actually use your 79 on the road and off it — because the wrong design choice will show itself fast once the corrugations hit.

We look at things most canopy buyers don’t consider:

  • Weight distribution along the chassis — A 79 is already rear-heavy. Put a poorly balanced canopy or fridge on the wrong side, and you’ll feel it instantly in your steering, suspension and GVM.
  • Your touring style — Weekend camps are one thing. Crossing the Gibb, crawling along corrugations, towing, or doing long coastal trips demands a completely different setup.
  • Gear mapping — Fridge size, drawers, recovery gear, cooking gear, power needs, rooftop load, spare wheels… we plan it all before a single bracket is drawn.
  • Chassis and body line alignment — We don't do canopies that “almost fit”. If the body lines don’t match the cab, it screams cheap and causes sealing issues down the track.
  • Future-proofing — We design with the idea that you’ll keep adding gear: extra lighting, power upgrades, new tools, or rooftop accessories. Nothing gets boxed in or made impossible to access.

Everything then goes into CAD so the layout isn’t a guess — it’s engineered. That means no weird angles, no wasted space, no stress points, and no surprises once it’s bolted onto the chassis.

The difference?

A cheap, off-the-shelf canopy might look OK on day one, but it’s not built around your 79, your weight load, or your touring demands. That’s why they crack, leak, rattle, and fall out of square after a few rough tracks.

A WKND Warriors canopy is designed like a part of the vehicle — not an accessory.
You’re not just buying storage. You’re buying a system built for reliability, balance, and long-distance touring that won’t let you down when you’re 300km from the closest town.

Design is the foundation.

And when you’re building for a 79 Series, the foundation has to be rock solid.
